I have written articles about the United States organ procurement system and ethics and am interested in learning more about organ transplantation on a global scale. You may know that it is illegal within the USA to pay for an organ donor, but I understand this is not the case elsewhere. My interest in organ transplantation includes: corneas, kidneys, and possibly other organs. I would like to see improved communication and resourcing of organs for patients in need. My brother spent ten years on dialysis after multiple failed kidney procedures.
Regale me with your knowledge.

Dear Joris,
Thank you so much for this wonderful resource. I read with interest the very clear rules for non European resident organ transplants and was particularly interested in the 5% rule, the pediatric provisions, and the living donor categories. I knew there had to be some language for these provisions and the resourceful Europeans have come up with them. I think this will be very helpful in my research.
Ciao Bella!

OK, now lets talk health disparities here, because there is a difference in organ donation based on the person's religion etc, and some discourage this practice. Also given the basic blood types and race, there should be a way to match potential patients with the country that has the optimum supply of organs for their type. For example, I am caucasian and O- blood, so not a lot of that in Asia. The information on Singapore is very helpful and that country has one of the lowest per capita health care expenditures and the lowest infant mortality rate.

Chintan,
Very interesting about the donor permission. In the USA anyone can be a donor if it is a match, the patient is considered viable, and an organ is available.Of course the donor can't have disease or anything, but emotional matches are sometimes written about in the newspapers, who are friends, co-workers etc,.
Thanks

Dear Roberta, the organ tarnsplant requires a donor and the donors are of three types mainly : (1) first relative (mother, father, brother, sister, husband, wife) of the patient, (2) second relative (relatives of the patient) and (3) emotional donors (friends or known person of the patients).......in India the first relative donors are permitted to go for the donation without informing the government provided required conditions matches with the patient.......whereas in India the second relative donors can also donate their kidneys but for that a permission is required from the court of law by providing various justifications........the third type i.e. emotional donors are not at all permitted in India.....infact singapore is the only country which allows emotional donors for organ donation........we are the first and oldest registered medical tourism company of Gujarat state of India and also having presence worldwide.......if (1) and (2) type of donors are there then we recommend you to carry out the treatment in one of the finest uro-surgical hospital of Gujarat and if (3) type of donor is available then we recommend you to prefer singapore for the surgery and we are associated with the finest hospital of singapore and will help you to get free doctor's opinion absolutely free based on reports provided by you.......we can be reached at : info@aksharmeditour.com......... i can be reached at chintan@aksharmeditour.com...... my personal contact no. is +919427801975

As I have understand from various sources, In India the 1st or 2nd family relative can donate organ( specifically kidney) with the legal formalities and donor and recipient status are reviewed by individual hospital admin committee finally decide after evaluation, either in govt. run institute or private hospitals. There are some NGO in India too promoting organ donation.

Thanks Dr. Jain,
I reviewed this site and since it is US based I am familiar with it. My understanding though is that there are different donor protocols depending on the country, India for example. I am trying to enhance my understanding of that. For example, people who donate kidneys for money, is this done? Also, what are the standards for safety, are they the same globally as far as typing for a donor match and disease screening? Thank you. Roberta Winter
