Is Switzerland actively pursuing a medical tourism economy?

From my perspective in the USA people seek medical care abroad for basically 4-5 reasons:1. cost saving for equivalent quality.2. return to country of origin for support and medical familiarity.3. adventure, outstanding reputation for medical care and/or advanced medical techniques for niche diseases ($ is no object).4. incentive (insurance)5. concurrent medical problems associated with touring. How does Switzerland fit in to this decision making process? Can you provide me (International Board…See More

Having worked at Hadassah Hospital and researched psoriasis treatment at the Dead Sea.....

Through my career I have worked at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, am familiar with the innovative and service oriented approach of the hospital and can testify to many examples of medical professional excellence.I have also practiced psoriasis treatment, visited the Dead Sea on numerous occasions, and met the medical professor who initially conceptualized the understanding of why Dead Sea environmental treatment was effective at treating psoriasis and other skin conditions.Israel has also been…See More

What is your interest in medical tourism?
After personal frustrations with the cost and approach to healthcare in the United States, Dr. Kalin and his wife sought other options. They traveled to South Korea where their fourth child was successfully fertilized in vitro during 2002.

This experience inspired Dr. Kalin to organize IBMS as a registry of physicians, surgeons, dentists and Healthcare Centers of Excellence whose qualifications have been reviewed.

David P. Kalin, M.D., M.P.H., is the Executive Director of IBMS. Dr. Kalin has a Masters of Science in Public Health, a background in Emergency Medicine, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and is also board-certified in Family Practice and as an Independent Medical Examiner.

Since establishing IBMS, Dr. Kalin and the IBMS Board of Advisors have reviewed the qualifications of physicians and facilities in Costa Rica, Venezuela, Israel, Thailand, South Korea, and the U.S.A. Through extensive interviews he and his colleagues have investigated medical and health-related opportunities and forged international relationships.

What exactly is your review process of facilities that have been included in your registry. Do these providers have to pay to be included, and where and how do you find them. How often do you or your people visit, inspect and certify these facilities and/or underwrite the credentials of the physicians and surgeons ? I have been unsuccessful in finding this in your company information, and you really need to include it - nothing is more important than that. Anyone can make a list off of the Internet... it's the qualifications, inspections, and processes employed to obtain inclusion in this IBSM registry that is critically important.

If we were to use anyone from your registry, what exactly does that mean ? What does that provide us as verification or validation that would support our decision to use the IBSM as an agency that in any way justifies our selection of that provider or practitioner ?

The industry certainly needs to have worldwide standardized qualifications for physicians and surgeons, and a collective effort among accreditations and certification agencies. As a Facilitator, one of the most time consuming and expensive processes in developing our "network" is sending our physician to visit and personally inspect these facilities and interview as well as verify the credentials of the providers. For us to truly manage our risk, and provide our clients with physicians and facilities that we can clearly recommend and feel legally and morally justified in recommending, takes more than some International Accreditation, or a Dept. Chief being board certified somewhere.

For the facilities and physicians to be included in the IBSM Registry, exactly how extensive is your qualification process ? That quite simply is all that matters. If we were to select a surgeon based in part or in whole because he/she were included in the IBSM Registry, what does that provide us in the way of assured competency and experience ?
What exactly IS your process and protocol for including physicians in your list that WE can stand behind as competent ? Is their a fee charged to be included in the Registry, and does that include any certification process? How often are these Inspections performed, and if so, by who... you are a family practitioner, who is employed in your practice to make these critical decisions that others may use to justify using the IBSM registry in the decisions process of selecting an overseas provider for their client.. or loved one ?

Please understand the significance of this... as much as this industry needs some single organization standardizing the quality of care process, it's important that whoever takes this role on - do it right.. otherwise it's not only worthless... it's dangerous.
