Ayurveda

Ayurveda ( आयुर्वेद ),is a Sanskrit word which means Science for life.

Etymology . Ayu ( आयु ) means age or Veda ( र्वेद) means compilation of knowledge or book of knowledge. Ayurveda is a science native to Indian subcontinent but has spread all over the world and has gained popularity and won the trust of millions of people.

Though Ayurveda has evolved over a period of thousands of years, the formal literature of Ayurveda traces back to Vedic period , Athravaveda , Charak Samhita, Sushruta Samhita .
The first medical text book Atreya Samhita and Astanga Hirdaya the book of Innovative drugs , gives inference of richness of Ayurvedic medicine. and the wide spread research done for up brining of this system of medicine.

Though Ayurveda is considered as a complimentary or alternative system of medicine ,Sushruta Samhita gives evidence of management of complicated surgical conditions.However Yoga is accepted by the western system of medicine as a therapeutic modality. Ayurveda puts emphasis on preventive measures and developing healthy life style for enrichment of life and slow down ageing along with curative and rehabilitative measure.

Annually thousands of tourists come to India for availing Ayurvedic treatment and allied disciplines .

Rehabilitation is really a team work. and needs multidisciplinary approach, In fact I would say there should be more research on multidisciplinary approach to all possible cases of disease and discomfort. Things with lesser side effects and drug reactions need to be followed for restoration of well being.

i feel there is a consorted effort needed from all the spheres and layers for revival of indigenous system of medicine, be is homeopathy, unani , reiki or anything else.

During my trips around India, I travelled to Kerala - specifically to the Kerala Institute for Medical Science. While talking to the senior management and CEO I was invited to spend 2 hours in their Ayurveda DEPARTMENT. Where 2 experts went to work on ME and I have to say it was an enjoyable experience.

What I wanted to comment on was when asked how the treatment was being used I was reliably informed that specifically for Stroke Patients to help with improving movement, as a form of relaxation for patients and to help in physiotherapy.

What was really important that it was managed within a HOSPITAL under the care of Physicians and Surgeons who were recommending the treatment or prescribing it for specific supportive safe interventions.
