Thailand is one of the top medical tourism destinations in the world with outstanding physicians, hospitals and clinics providing outstanding care to its patients at extremely competitive prices. The attitude of the medical professionals that skillfully combine the best of eastern & western medicine is refreshing.

I first became aware of the quality of care when I was touring Thailand in 2004 and was accidently injured from a fall sustained when a protruding barbed wire sliced through my foot. I stumbled into a close by restaurant where I requested ice and towels to help stop the bleeding.

The woman that owned the restaurant quickly grabbed her car keys and drove me to the emegency hospital much to my surprise, especially considering that she was the only person there and my injury was sustained outside her establishment.

When I entered the hospital, I was quickly usherered in where I immediately had three doctors attending to me. I was afraid of how I would pay after being informed that the hospital didn't accept health insurance.

After applying multiple stitches along with injected anaethetics I expressed my concerns about my ability to continue my trip without interuption. I was given all of the supplies I would need to change the dressings, antibiotics to prevent infection a Tetunus shot in addition to the anaethesia for my wound and then presented with my bill for the equalvalent of $25.00 US.

I was astounded to say the least. I had not only received the best care ever given in an emergency room but could easily pay the bill inspite of them denying my health insurance. I was further amazed that one of the doctors attending to me then wheeled me in the hospital wheelchair back to my hotel. The hotel was close to the hospital but I was still amaised by the personal care and attention.

No one from Thailand was surprised by any of my experience from the lady closing her restaurant to assist a stranger to a medical doctor assist me back to my hotel. I was told by many of Thailand's gracious people, that it is common.

I'm refreshed that the medical community in Thailand is more concerned about whether they can provide the best care possible to foreign patients than they are about how much money they will make or potential liability concerns of treating someone from another country. I only wish that the same was true in the US.

Don't get me wrong, there are many individules in the US that help others at an accident as well as doctors who care. This is however not part of our culture and is the exception rather than the rule.
