Anti-Narcotics Department dealt with 1,917 drug cases in 2009
KARAK (Petra) –– The Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) dealt with 1,917 drug cases since the beginning of 2009 including trade, possession and consumption, AND Director Brigadier General Tayel Majali said on Monday during a lecture at Mutah University. He indicated that the number of people involved in drug-related cases reached 3,399 since January, adding that the perpetrators were between the ages of 18 and 30 and included Jordanians and foreigners.

The Vienna conference in March 2009
The declaration from UN's Commission of Narcotic Drugs Fifty-second session in Vienna, 11-20 March 2009, with participation from 130 member countries, state that "We are determined to tackle the world drug problem and to actively promote a society free of drug abuse..." The concept drug abuse is used five times in the declaration.
The Home Office estimated that the social and economic cost of drug abuse to the UK economy in terms of crime, absenteeism and sickness is in excess of £20 billion a year.
