Social Networking is defined as the building of online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. Most social network services are web based and provide a variety of ways for users to interact.

Today, through the use of sites such as Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, and more recently Twitter, social networking has become an ever growing phenomenon that few people really realize the power of. Yes, social networking is a great place to meet up with friends and hold various lines of communication, but its also much more than that. It is a powerful marketing tool that can be used to spread company names, products and actions across the globe, an immediate way to reach hundreds or thousands of individuals in just seconds.

How do you view social networking? Have you ever used it for any purpose other than communicating with family and friends? Do you see how powerful a tool it could actually be and if so, are you willing to learn all about it?

I think social networking really helps the growth of any industry. Also, I think in the medical tourism industry where people who work together are in different countries and different time zones, it can make a HUGE difference in the growth of the industry and allow people to connect and build business relationships they otherwise would not be able to.
Melissa,

I have to agree with you whole heartedly. Facebook and MySpace started as small sites that were a good place for people to meet up with common interests and share their experiences (whether good or bad). Twitter is quickly becoming another powerful social network, but its architecture makes it more accessible to other purposes. From addressing customer service issues to saving peoples' lives, Twitter is going to change the way the world thinks of social networking. Have you used Twitter? Do you see the power that lies within its social aspects?

Let me know what you think!

P.S. Social networking can never replace the power of face to face marketing and though I probably won't be able to make the conference, it's a very powerful way to spread the word.
Attached is a power point show in pdf form from one of the Tourism professors at UNLV focused on social networking programs and filled with hyperlinks. She has agreed to permit me to share it with anyone interested on this site. Some wonderful resources identified and explained in it.
