In which all  languages  should a  signage be displayed  for patient information ?? Accreditation requires easy visible display of information  . Bu the question , which all languages should it be the  displayed and provision for  patients who do know know displayed language, e.g. A Croatian hospital displays a bilingual board  of info,Croatian for local and English for international patients ,  then what provision  be made or a patient who speaks Spanish ? Appointing an interpreter is not an economic option for rare cases.

Signage is a signage, after all. Standardization of signage (sign language?) too may not solve the problem you are hinting at. But,again, signage or no signage, the patient will ultimately reach some counter manned by some properly trained guide which, could be the only solution..meanwhile, I too am interested to hear from creative minds some innovative ideas!.

Good comments. If healthcare providers think of patient as a customer, who can get to know by beating his head against every nuke and corner to get around, then its OK. But if we become serious about these issues, we have to pay best attention to address this important aspect of care in hospital.
Good to know that your interest is still there, even though you are not much stressed about the fact.

Good topic, and it is very important to raise this issue, especially in hospitals where there are international patients.
I think there are two or three important languages which can solve the issue, it can be English, Spanish and local is good idea. I think creating important signages in multiple languages with some switch to change to your choice with some intelligent switch boards with an electronic display board and ease of use, is all possible.

Thanks for appreciating and after your idea, I have setup a committee to develop one such signage with advanced tools, where some important signages are displayed on one computer kIOSK for visitors to read them in their language and save numbers from signage board to see, reference on the saved photos, this means 100 languages can be easily covered with simple signages.

From patient's safety perspective you are absolutely right. But I think, from individual patient perspective it is quite not possible. What can be proposed is that , In a county perspective English and Mother tongue of that country can be considered in forming a standard of signage .
Intelligent switch boards with an electronic display board are Excellent innovative option but, it needs to be mandatory under the Accreditation of the Hospital to avoid patient inconvenience otherwise it would be a adopted largely by the Hospitals in India.

I think it is a serious topic for discussion and would aptly say that Parkway Hospitals Singapore have a very strong presence in this field by having Parkway patient assistance centres across various countries and leading to a IPS (International Patient Srvice desk) in their hospital with translators of all languages present there to hand hold the patients.
With the PPAC's across various destinations the IPS is very aware of the nationality coming in and therefore a predesignated person is arranged to meet the patient at the hospital to ease his travel and treatment.

You must have Spanish, English and the Local Language. If you think appointing an interpreter is to expensive full time,
call an interpreting company based in the U.S.A. You call them when needed they serve on the phone as a 3rd person interpreter. It's like 25cents a min or so...try LSI They are based in Houston Texas and offer multiple Language interpreters for every country and every business.
