I think healthcare globalization goes beyond a person travelling from his hometown to a destination B for treatment. I think in this day and age where communication happens almost at the speed of thought it is also about remote diagnosis, advice, planning and even treatment.
We have radiologists in India moonlighting and trying to decipher radiographs made on patients in the US, we have online nurse stations which give advice to patients in the developed world sitting in another country. All these are also globalization trends that are happening in the world of healthcare.
What is most striking is a remote surgery. It combines elements of robotics, cutting edge communication technology such as high-speed data connections and elements of management information systems. It promises to allow the expertise of specialized surgeons to be available to patients worldwide, without the need for patients to travel beyond their local hospital.
Another area which is growing in prominence is called ‘internet of things’ which allows gadgets to understand your health condition and telemetrically transfer this data to a remote central location for diagnosis and treatment planning.
So, yes… healthcare is getting globalized but more than a patient going to the hospital in a different country, it could be a remote healthcare service coming home using the power of connectivity, information and customized service connecting healthcare providers and patients globally.
